MEND Training

For Middle and High School Faculty, Staff, Counselors, and Administrators

Students are facing increasing challenges related to bullying and teen dating violence. They are vulnerable and traumatized when they finally find the courage to reach out for help. It’s vital that adults respond in trauma-informed ways that won’t inadvertently lead teens to a place of hopelessness and despair. The MEND Project offers training for middle and high school faculty, staff, counselors, and administrators to help schools respond with greater clarity, confidence, and care when students disclose bullying, dating violence, or unhealthy relationship dynamics.

Who This Training Is For

This training is designed for middle and high school staff, including:

  • Teachers
  • Counselors
  • Administrators
  • Other student-support and student-facing school personnel

What Participants Will Learn

Participants will learn how to:

  • Recognize signs of overt and covert bullying, teen dating violence, emotional abuse, and coercive control
  • Respond to student disclosures according to best practices, with greater confidence and compassion
  • Better understand the challenges that can affect student safety, reporting, and support
  • Strengthen school-based response practices and referral pathways
  • Provide students with the compassionate and informed support they need when concerns arise
  • Recognize how fear, shame, confusion and trauma present and can affect disclosures and help-seeking behaviors

Why This Training Matters

Students need more than awareness; they need adults who are equipped to respond well when they reach out for help. Research shows that bullying can have serious effects on the well-being of the student experiencing harm, including increased risk for poor mental health and suicidal thoughts and behaviors.* Students who feel connected at school are less likely to experience these negative outcomes.** This training helps schools take a proactive approach by equipping faculty and staff to recognize when harm is being done, respond with clarity and care, and better support student well-being through trauma-informed and student-centered practices.
